Background: The Challis Herd Management Area (HMA) encompasses over 168,700 acres and has an Appropriate Management Level (AML) of 185 - 253 wild horses. Snowstorm (HMA), part of this Complex, has been “cancelled” saying that animals were not in declining condition. However Little Owyhee has a roundup of 858 horses with a removal of 544 and Owyhee lists 141 with removal of 50. How many will BLM actually remove? It is hard to say. Just a couple of weeks ago the Wassuk roundup was completed. The HMA is bordered on the west by the Owyhee Reservoir, on the south by the Leslie Gulch Road, and on the north by the Owyhee Dam. The BLM is claiming that the roundup is necessary because wild horses are grazing outside of the HMA in areas affected by the 2015 Soda wildfire, which burned close to 280,000 acres in Oregon and Idaho.
Jan 25, 2017 · The roundup is part of a BLM plan to reduce the Sulphur HMA’s population to an Appropriate Management Level of 165 wild horses over a six- to 10-year period. In March 2016, the wild horse population on the 265,675-acre HMA was estimated at 957 head.
